Join Preservation Texas and the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department (TPWD) for an exclusive, hands-on masonry preservation training workshop at Hueco Tanks State Park & Historic Site. Space is limited to 15 public participants, who will train alongside 15 TPWD staff members throughout the workshop.

Participants will gain hands-on experience working with historic stone masonry, exploring both dry-stack and earthen-mortar construction techniques through the stabilization and rebuilding of sections of ruined walls at the historic Escontrias homestead within the park. Training will emphasize the use of locally available materials, traditional tools, and time-tested construction methods.

The workshop will also feature a module on assessing historic adobe buildings, covering topics including cracking patterns, moisture testing, and soil analysis. Participants will learn how to identify the underlying causes of structural damage and understand how those findings inform appropriate preservation treatments.

The workshop will kick off with an opening reception and presentation at Preservation Texas’s West Texas Heritage Center in downtown El Paso on Wednesday, November 11, providing an opportunity to meet fellow participants and learn more about the park’s history.
