Preservation Texas is seeking a dynamic, bilingual West Texas Program Officer (WTXPO) to serve as the primary face of the organization in El Paso and Hudspeth counties. Based at the West Texas Heritage Center in El Paso, the officer will connect local stakeholders and historic property owners with Preservation Texas programs and statewide resources. This position requires multifaceted expertise, including technical assistance, architectural history research, educational program coordination, community engagement, and relationship cultivation with supporters of Preservation Texas. This is a full-time, salaried position with an annual salary range of $60,000–$65,000, commensurate with experience.
While a degree in historic preservation is not mandatory, candidates must demonstrate a firm grasp of preservation best practices and historic architecture, alongside a genuine curiosity regarding the cultural landscapes of West Texas. As a primary representative of the organization, the successful candidate must also possess strong public speaking skills and the ability to present preservation issues persuasively to diverse audiences.
Applicants must provide their own transportation throughout the region, with travel reimbursed at current IRS mileage rates. The role requires the ability to conduct site visits in all weather conditions, including navigating unrestored buildings and overgrown ruins. Additionally, the WTXPO will have the opportunity to participate in Preservation Texas events hosted throughout the state.
Applications are due by Friday, February 27, 2026. However, Preservation Texas reserves the right to begin interviews and fill the position as soon as a qualified candidate is identified. Please submit a cover letter detailing your interest and qualifications, a CV, and two or three professional references from the historic preservation field. Additionally, include an original short sample of research or advocacy writing related to history or architecture, provided in both English and Spanish. All materials should be submitted digitally to info@preservationtexas.org and addressed to the Executive Director.
