Part-Time Research Internship Opportunity in San Marcos

Preservation Texas is seeking an intern to assist our Central Texas Program Officer in developing a Field Guide to Stone Houses of Central Texas. Work will be part-time in our office on the square in downtown San Marcos, Texas. The intern will work from 15-20 hours per week over 10 weeks for a maximum of 160 hours beginning on February 2, 2026. This opportunity is made possible by a grant from the Burdine Johnson Foundation, and is not limited to students.

The Project:

The Field Guide will be a concise but comprehensive resource on the early, stone-built domestic vernacular architecture of Blanco and Hays counties for a general audience. It will cover the region’s history through its stone masonry houses, outbuildings, as well as its associated landscapes, quarries, and geological sites, with entries including photos, historical context, architectural details, and locations. Maps and essays will also be included.

Responsibilities:

  • Assisting in identifying all known extant stone masonry houses in Blanco and Hays Counties. 

  • Helping to draft and edit sample entries and thematic content.

  • Conducting preliminary archival and field research on historic sites.

  • Compiling photographs, maps, and historical data.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • An interest in public history, historic preservation, archives, or related disciplines.

  • Proficiency in conducting research and verifying information.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Work Hours & Compensation:

The intern is expected to work at least 15 hours per week toward a maximum of 160 hours, and will be paid hourly at a rate of $15.00 per hour.
