The Art Moderne Style Capitan Theater was opened on November 15, 1949. The Capitan is a twin to the Granada Theater in Houston; both were built by the Phil Isley chain which operated theaters in Texas, Oklahoma and California.

The Capitan Theater was closed as a regular movie theatre in 1969, and began screening adult movies and Spanish language films in 1970 before it was permanently closed in 1976.

In 2014, the City of Pasadena sold the theater to a private company. The character defining neon signage and murals have been stripped from the building, which remains threatened and vacant.
