Atlanta-Miller Grade School
This school, known initially as Atlanta Grade School, was built by Hardy Brothers of Texarkana in 1936 as a Public Works Administration project. The construction utilized locally made bricks, and took only 120 days to complete. Due to high enrollment, building additions were completed over the years. Known later as Miller Grade School, the facility was integrated in 1970 and remained in use as a public school until 1974. The building was used for various services until the 1990s when it became a storehouse, falling victim to deferred maintenance and water damage.
UPDATE: Atlanta-Miller Grade School alumni and supporters have incorporated into a 501(c)(3) called Atlanta Grade School Friends. With the mission of restoring the historic school, the group also oversees the development and management of educational programs and related activities for all ages that enhance the building’s usefulness. They envision the Atlanta-Miller Grade school as a place for community education, meetings and potentially for workforce training. If you have questions, reach out to the group via email.
