First Independent Baptist Church

The First Independent Baptist Church was completed in 1918 to house a congregation that was established in 1868. The building has been home to many civil rights meetings and community events over the course of its history.  The building is still used by the congregation that has plans to address major structural issues so they can continue to meet here.

This project has been awarded a $50,000 grant through Preservation Texas’s Rural African-American Heritage Grants Program.
