22nd Annual Preservation Texas Honor Awards
Preservation Texas Awards is currently accepting
nominations for its annual Honor Awards. The awards will be presented at the Treasures
of Texas Award Ceremony Dinner on May 2, 2008 during the Texas Historical
Commission Annual Preservation Conference in Corpus Christi. Nominations
are due by March 24, 2008 at 5:00 pm.
Honor Award Categories
Clara Driscoll Award recognizes individuals or
organizations with long-term dedication to the preservation of a community or
property. Examples of projects completed or programs instituted and a general
discussion of commitment to historic preservation should accompany nominations
in this category. More than one award may be given in this category.
Historic Rehabilitation Award recognizes
successful rehabilitation of a historic residential, commercial or
institutional building or structure. Nominations in this category should be
complete and may be adaptive use projects or projects that offer creative
solutions for rehabilitating historic properties. More than one award may be
given in this category.
Historic Restoration Award acknowledges historic
residential, commercial, or institutional buildings or structures that have
been restored to a selected period. Nominations in this category should be
complete and may recognize interiors, landscapes, or sites. A special emphasis
is on projects where owners, architects, and contractors expressed exceptional
care in respecting the historic fabric and setting of a historic property.
More than one award may be given in this category.
Texas Media Award honors news media that support
historic preservation efforts and provide outstanding reporting of
preservation projects and issues and local history. Nominations in this
category should be accompanied by examples of work completed and may include
video, broadcast, or print media. More than one award may be given in this
category to recognize diverse media or audiences.
Public Service Award is given to an elected,
appointed or government official who has made a significant contribution to
historic preservation in Texas. A brief biographical statement, copies of
publicity, photographs or slides of work completed should accompany
nominations in this category. Typically, only one award is given in this
category.
Truett Latimer Award is named for Texas' first
State Historic Preservation Officer and executive director of the Texas
Historical Commission. This award goes to working professionals who
demonstrate a significant commitment and sustained involvement to preservation
as part of their job responsibilities. Only one award is given in this
category.
Alamo Award is given to a nonprofit organization
or public entity for a valiant historic preservation effort that failed, but
had subsequent positive preservation results in the community. Nominations
should be accompanied by evidence of sustained preservation efforts as well as
subsequent results for historic preservation in a community.
Curtis Tunnell Award recognizes achievements in
the promotion or preservation of the state's multicultural history that bring
a larger understanding and appreciation of the diverse history of Texas. This
award is a means of bringing attention to building rehabilitation,
interpretive programs, heritage leadership or other achievements that
emphasize African-American, Hispanic, or other ethnic heritage in the State.
It may recognize a living treasure that continues a significant folklife or
folklore tradition. Nominations for this category should include adequate
supportive documentation. Only one annual award is given in this category.
Heritage Education Award recognizes the
achievements to improve educational efforts or public awareness of historic
preservation. An individual(s), organization, program or exhibit may be
nominated. Nominations for this award should include in the descriptive
information an explanation of the effect and intended audience for the
educational or public awareness effort. Only one annual award is given in this
category.
The Honor Awards will be judged by an independent jury of
distinguished professionals representing a cross-section of disciplines within
the field of historic preservation. All submissions remain anonymous until
selections are made.
Nomination Submission information
Each nomination must include:
- A cover sheet with nominee's name, address, phone number and
e-mail address, submitter's name, address, phone number and e-mail address
and category entered.
- $25.00 nomination fee
- A concise description (500 words or less) of the project,
organization, or individual that is being nominated. Include information
such as the historical significance of a site, unique strategies used to
preserve the site, national, state or local designation of the site or the
people involved in the project, how the project advances preservation in
that community or is a model for other communities or the accomplishments
of an individual or an organization.
- Six 5" x 7" photographs and/or up to six digital
photos (300 dpi resolution on disk) illustrating various aspects of
the program or project. Please label photos and include a credit line for
publication. Project photos should demonstrate before and after results,
show interiors from various angles and include exterior shots. Photos with
people and activities around the site illustrate the relationship to the
community.
- Nominations for individual achievement require at least two (2)
different head shots of the nominee
- Up to five (5) supporting brochures, letters or news clippings
may be submitted in support of a nomination.
Release to Preservation Texas of unqualified right to use
nomination materials for one year is presumed with nominee's signature.
